Counseling Team The VCHS Counseling Department partners with students, parents and teachers to prayerfully identify the needs, interests, aptitudes, and goals of each student and to provide thoughtful academic and college/career planning throughout four years of high school.

Ongoing Student Assistance
  • Summer Opportunities are highlighted through spring workshops for students to learn about travel, internship, work, and study options
  • Course Selection advice and assistance
  • Tutor Lists for VCS teacher and student tutors
  • Monitor and Encourage at-risk students
  • Counselor Appointments available for scheduled and drop-in appointments throughout the year
  • Counseling Center resource books and current college catologs are available for student research

  • Four Years of Web-Based Training Naviance to assist students in the early stages of the college search process
  • 4-year Planning for freshmen families to map out an academic plan based on each student’s goals and abilities
  • Class Presentations covering strategies for academic success, course selection, and college preparation
  • Individual Counselor Meetings with each student every year
  • Senior College Day held during PSAT testing to give seniors an opportunity to complete college applications and essays with counselor assistance
  • College/Career Day held in November offers breakout sessions tailored for all grade levels
  • Fresh Start is a specialized orientation program for incoming ninth graders
  • Continued Academic Planning and Graduation Status updates from freshman through senior year
   

College Preparation

  • College Essay and Application Assistance provided to every student
  • Parent/Student College Workshop a Saturday event with break out sessions on a variety of college admissions topics
  • College Scholarship and Financial Aid Information presented through workshops, announcements, and individual contact of qualified students
  • College Tours led by VCHS counselors
  • College Representative visits scheduled during lunch throughout the fall

  • Annual Christian College Fair at VCHS with over 40 colleges on campus

Parent Presentations

  • Incoming Freshman Parent Night a presentation for new families to learn about class selection and what to expect
  • 4-year Planning for freshmen families maps out an academic plan based on the student’s goals and abilities
  • Parent/Student College Workshops offer breakout sessions for current sophomore and junior families that address specifics related to the college process
  • Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Family Nights provide a broad overview of timelines and college application process to students and parents
  • Outside Speakers scheduled on a wide range of topics
   

NCAA and NAIA Information

  • Workshops on the college recruitment process
  • Each student-athlete expressing a desire to play college sports is given individual college counseling
   

Additional Services

  • College Application and Essay Workshops offered in the summer for seniors
  • Highlands Ability Assessment and feedback sessions to identify students’ God-given abilities
  • Test Prep Seminars offered throughout the year, including SAT and ACT seminars. Benchmark tests are administered at the start of the class, followed by a diagnostic test at the end of the course to evaluate student improvement
  • Guest Speakers on college essay writing tips and applying for financial aid
