First Grade Students Visit Stanford University Geology Department

Valley Christian Junior High School students were honored to spend Thursday, May 2, celebrating the National Day of Prayer. Prayer permeated the entire school day from students praying over the public address system at the beginning of each class to a continuous flow of students visiting our chapel to pray with others. Each student’s prayer was heart-felt and sincere.

It was a meaningful day for students and teachers as they brought our Nation, pastors, churches, school, and administrators before the Lord in prayer.

From the bright flowers to the verdant grass to the neon Easter eggs, vibrant colors can be found seemingly everywhere in springtime, even in AP English Language and Composition.

Based on their performance at one or more qualifying meets this school year, five Valley Christian students, Jonathan Zhang, 9^th grade, Alexander Lee, Ethan Lee, Markus Tran, 11^th grade; and Matthew Lin 12^th grade competed as a school in this year's high school state championship on April 20. They continued with their year of amazing accomplishments by capturing 3rd place!

Students dissected a chicken wing observing the connective tissue, tendons, and muscle tissue. They identified the different typea of joints in the wing. Most students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson although a few needed to step outside the room for some fresh air for a moment. Overall, a great deal was learned by all!

This semester, the High School American Sign Language students have been visiting with Deaf students at Dartmouth Junior High School developing sign language skills and general language skills. Seeing the displays and talking with the teachers will help students choose from the abundant elective offerings in the upcoming school year at the junior high.

VCHS Graduate Janell LaRont (’11) earned the A.I.I. Player of the Week Award for her great play during DSU's spring break trip in Arizona. This is the second time this year she has received the honor.

The week of March 11^th-March 17^th LaRont had a .517 batting average, 8 RBI, 4 stolen bases, and recorded 5 doubles and 2 triples.

2011 Graduate Kevin Dorn was honored last week being chosen to the Academic All-Conference team as a member of the swim team at Rose-Hulman University.

JH Girls Volleyball finishes season with a 10-0 record and earning the #1 seed in the Central Division.

Valley Christian High School Alumnae Jenna Davis ('10) was selected by Cal Poly as its 2013 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

On Valentine’s Day, February 14^th 2013, 34 students took part in the High School’s fourth trip to South Africa. During the week in South Africa many amazing things took place. School supplies, clothing, personal items and food were delivered to over 100 children at an ongoing project that VCHS has supported for 5 years through the STAK Club. A building was remodeled to be used as a center for toddlers to be taken care of while their parents work. The students and faculty took food, medicine and water to the homebound and sick in a place called Freedom Park. The students attended church, went to a game reserve and had students speak in high schools in the Rustenburg area. In addition 10 of the students were baptized on our last day in Africa. In all this was an outstanding trip, full of adventure, hard work and spiritual growth.

2012 Graduate Chris Graham has made the Portland State football team as a walk-on and is dominating in the classroom.

Student discuss the impact of communication through digital formats.

During the week of February 25 –March 1, Valley Christian Junior High celebrated Diversity, as we focused on the various languages and forms of verbal and non-communication used throughout the world. We also focused on American individuals who led, sometimes by accident and other times through their various valiant acts and ideals, to enhance our great nation.

The week began as the History classes focused on the various forms of non-verbal communication that are used throughout the world. Students discussed how our body language speaks volumes and how it and various gestures can be interpreted differently in different cultures. Students were able to share experiences they have had during their travels overseas.

The next day, students discussed various Heroes who, as ordinary people, performed extraordinary service for all Americans. They discussed the service, accomplishments, and dedication of Chief America Horse, Congressman Daniel Inouye, Caesar Chavez, and Rosa Parks.

The week was highlighted during the Wednesday Chapel. Ms. Kari White led the reading of Ephesians 2:14-19 with the assistance of several VCJH students who read a verse in their native languages. Joining Ms. White in the reading of Ephesians was Mustafa Naguib (Arabic), Rhea Basarkar (Hindi), Klemen Kotar (Slovenian), Ahzin Nam (Korean), Rachel Davis (French), Dante Bruno (Italian), and Nicholas Starink (Dutch).

It was an exciting week led by the Social Science department of Ms. White, Mr. Chuck Heath, Mr. Dwain Fairweather and Mr. Steve Parmenter leading the charge of bringing Diversity awareness and understanding to the students of VCJH.

Seventh Grade Student, Priscilla Lee, is participating in the Synopsys Science Fair today! Her experiment tests the effects of shampoo on the hair follicle.

Valley Christian Alumnae Jazmine Davis ('11) was named to the All-Pac-12 Womens Basketball Team for the second time in two years.

Early in the morning of February 28, many excited students and their parents lugged a variety of interesting pieces of equipment to the Main Gym. They were preparing to assemble their entry in our annual Rube Goldberg Competition.

The Valley Christian Physical Education classes ended the first semester with a bang! Students worked together in groups to design workout routines for their final projects. To make the workout routines fun and motivating, students choreographed music with their warm up, cardiovascular component and cool down. These five minute workout routines were a great way to carry the importance of health and wellness into the new year. Students used a variety of equipment, including dumbbells, jump ropes, resistance bands, medicine balls, and agility ladders, to get their peer's heart rates up and work up a healthy sweat. Students will continue to use these workouts throughout the rest of the school year in preparation for the state fitnessgram test.

The Junior High Boys Soccer team is off to a slow start, but looking to straighten things out in Division play this week.

The 7th Grade Boys Basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 15-2 while capturing the Santa Clara East Side League Championship

The 8th grade boys basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 17-1 which included a Evergreen Shootout Championship and Santa Clara League Championship

Last Friday morning, the Valley Christian Junior High staff was privledged to hear a presentation by the Junior High Warriorbots. The students explained that along with building a robot and programming it, the Junior High robotics team must meet a "science fair" like challenge. The theme of the challenge is year is Senior Solutions, where the students help a local senior to solve daily challenges encountered with aging, using modern technology. The team met with a man named Tom, who is legally blind, hard of hearing, and confined to a wheelchair. One of the problems he faces on a regular basis is bumping into walls, doors, and cabinets; the WarriorBots were determined to solve this problem. They solved it by attaching ultrasonic sensors that use ultrasonic signals to detect obstacles by reflecting them off walls and other objects in Tom's path. Once the sensor detects an obstacle,Tom is notified by vibrators in his pockets and bright, flashing LED lights which he can see eventhough his sight is impaired. Along with inventing what they call the USense for Tom, the team, their parents, and some volunteers visited Tom's house repairing and painting his damaged walls, doors, and cabinets. The team also built him a ramp to provide quick access to his backyard. The WarriorBots are now preparing for their state competition in March where they will present this project and compete with their robot.

On January 21^st, VCHS students were in Washington D.C. to witness the inauguration of President Barack Obama in our nation’s 57^th inaugural celebration. A group of nine students traveled with Social Science Co-Department Chair, Lindsay Marshall, to Washington D.C. with Close Up, a civics education program that has operated in our nation’s capital for over forty years and trained thousands of students in civic engagement.

This letter, that was just was received from First Lady Obama, adds to the prestigious congratulatory letters Valley Christian's AMSE program has received.

A missionary from Hawaii for Spiritual Emphasis Week? Sarah Hill, youth pastor to Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm from a shark attack, encouraged our junior high students to be willing to step out and obey the call of Christ on their lives.

There are exciting new opportunities in the World Languages department this summer and for the 2013-2014 school year. Spanish teachers are happy to announce that Spanish 3 Honors and Advanced Placement Spanish will be offered for dual college credit next year.

Science Club was a little fishy this week. A group of junior high students are researching fisheries as an after school activity. They are studying the various aquatic environments, living requirements, types of fish, aquarium set up and filtration, fish behavior, and anatomy/physiology. This week's goal was to gain understaning of the interal workings of a fish. Yes, it was time to disect a perch! Through the dissection we learned the external anatomy, internal digestion and circulation, and took a look inside the eye. The coming weeks the club will be installing marine aquariums in Mrs. Tuers' and Mrs. Moore's classrooms. The club is open to any enrolled VCS junior high students. Come and join in the fun!

The Elementary campus partners with the San Jose Fire Department

In November students of Latin joined together for a special celebration of their study of the Latin language. They enjoyed Togo sandwiches dressed in Roman togas.

I am pleased to announce that, after three years of intensive research and testing, Valley Christian High School will adopt a 1:1 iPad program beginning in the fall of 2013.

With the excitement and anticipation of the 2012 Election, the VCJH History department wanted the students to participate by casting their votes on whom they would like to be president of the United States in a Mock Election.

Every school year, the entire VCES 5th grade class heads over Highway 17 to Mission Springs Conference Center for a week of Science Camp.

Last week, the biology students diligently worked through a lab that demonstrated how minor changes in a habitat can drastically change the behavior of organisms. This lab was titled "Fish Respiration Rates Lab.”

Geometry students learn about lines, angles, transversals, and fun in their Geometry class.

Seventh Grade Bible students learned to teach like Jesus, who, by the way, used mathematical equations to enhance the understanding of “those you had ears to hear”! Students selected verses with a significant spiritual truth and equated it with familiar earthly objects. They wrote, illustrated, and presented their parables to their classmates. Jason Dong and Thomas Torode captured their class while providing sound biblical instruction.

Students explored the inside and outside texture of the organ, where the food enters the stomach, as well as looking at a piece of tissue under a microscope to identify the groups of cells which make up the tissue.

Elementary students and families unite to raise money and have fun!

Cross Country Alumni Jennifer Bergman, Morgan Lira, and Sean Davis are having stellar years for their respective universities.

This week, the Earth Science classes experimented with weathering and erosion by water. We divided 30 rocks into three piles of ten. The “A” rocks were our control group. The students added 300ml of water to the “B” rocks, and shook them 1,000 times. The same amount of water was added to the “C” rocks, but they got shaken 2,000 times. Students then compared the rocks, the amount of sediment, and filled out a lab report. It was a fun learning experience for all…except maybe the classroom below us.

Back to School Night Success!

Yesterday was truly a great day to be a VC Warrior! Our first Jr. High HPC basketball training session had 20 players and all of them committed to our three rules of training:

1) Work harder than anyone else

2) Be selfless and a great teammate

3) Have fun!

Twenty amazing young girls and boys from East Africa arrived at the Skyway Campus ready to share their lives and love of Jesus Christ with the junior high students.

Quote from a VCJH teacher – “It was great to see God moving in such a powerful way in the eighth graders this early in the year. They were given the charge to be all in and put God first in their lives. God will use them as great leaders this year as they trust Him and remember their commitment to Him.”

2nd Annual Family Camp a Huge Success!

VCES competes in Math Olympiad Competition with great results!

Seeking to gather examples of excellence and innovation in education, Intel invited Valley Christian Junior High to showcase their exemplary programs and projects at our State’s Capitol.

On May 19th the VCES Warriors competed at Cupertino High School in the Bethel Lutheran School Track Meet.

VC Senior Caitlyn Krulee signs with Oregon and will compete with their Acrobatics and Tumbling team!

The 2011 graduate, Tyler Walker, posted a .380 batting average, which ranks fourth in the league. The powerful leadoff batter also ranked second in runs scored (46), slugging percentage (.614) and home runs (nine).

After a year of sports specific clinics coached by HS/JH coaches & student-athletes and Inside Looks at home events, the Little Warriors celebrated a great year! Thank you to all the coaches and student-athletes who contributed to the success of Little Warrior Nation this year!

5th Grade Super Science Sleuths!

Students in all fifth grade classes recently enjoyed our first annual “Super Science Sleuths!”

Students from Valley Christian Junior High visit our Nation's Capitol! They have seen the Smithsonian, the National Archives, the war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, the White House, and more! History is coming alive for these students as they see the impact of our great forefathers on our country and their lives.

Students from the Leadership class brought the VCJH student body together in an effort to raise money for Grace Public School.

Yesterday 25 elementary students arrived on the Skyway campus to take part in Little Warrior Nation Track & Field.

Thomas is 1 of 30 5th graders from Northern California to play in the California State All-Star football game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Ca.

Valley Christian High School is honored to celebrate the following 14 student-athletes that are signing and/or committing to play in college next year at our National Letter of Intent Signing Day.

VCES enjoyed its annual Elementary Baseball Day as the Varsity team hosted the Serra Padres.

Acclaimed Authors visit the Elementary Campus

Two teams from the seventh grade Physical Science Honors class won first and second place in the state for their science projects in the eCybermission competition. Each student on the first place team was awarded a $1,000 savings bond, and each student on the second place team was awarded a $500 savings bond. Congratulations to these award winning students and their teacher, Miss Haggerty!

In mid-February 2012, the eighth graders took their U.S. Constitution Benchmark Exam. All students needed to pass this exam in order to graduate from eighth grade. Students, who scored a 95% or above, were eligible to participate in an all-day class fieldtrip. On April 26, 2012, twenty-eight students and three teachers went to downtown San José to tour City Hall and the Superior Court.
