The 4th annual Valley Christian Junior High School Rube Goldberg Competition was once again a resounding success! The completion was held on February 28. Eleven teams consisting of two to four students competed to be named the most inventive group to create a sound in at least ten different steps. Students were judged on the number of simple machines that were incorporated, organization, teamwork, creativity, success, as well as other important factors. Their machines were expected to make a simple task as complex as possible utilizing their math, science, and creativity skills. Students arrived at 8:30am to begin building their machines. The day cumulated with a final running of each machine with the entire student body watching the action! Audience members were heard to be cheering and sighing as machines demonstrated both success and failure. It was wonderful to admire the teamwork, perseverance, and creative gifts that God has given our students! Winners: The Effort E

Students in Life Science had an opportunity to discover one of the known facts of bacteria, that it lives everywhere! First, they predicted which area of the classroom they thought contained the most bacteria and why they believed bacteria would be found there. Then, they cultured a sample from that location using a cotton swab. Lastly, they placed that culture into a sterile petri dish containing nutrient agar. Now they will be watching their bacteria grow and form colonies of the different shapes of bacteria. We will be watching the bacteria grow inside an incubator in which the heat will produce favorable conditions for the bacteria. In about a week, the students will be able to explore the bacterial growth and reasons for this growth.
