Hello from Alumni Ministries
“Well, that was unexpected.”
You’ve probably expressed this sentiment over the past few years – I certainly have. But for me, it was, “How did I end up back at Valley Christian almost 20 years after graduation?” Over the years, I enjoyed speaking at chapels, baccalaureates, town halls, and spending time with the International Students to encourage you as a guest and alumnus. Still, I never imagined joining the staff at VCS. So, why here and why now? The simple answer: you.
This year, after speaking at baccalaureate for the Class of 2021, I realized that over the school’s 60-year history with over 12,000 alumni, there were very few connections between us and our alma mater after graduation. Something shifted in me, and instead of wondering when or if someone else was going to build a community for us, I began to wonder, “how can I contribute?” Throughout my faith journey, I have experienced that the places I never expected to be can become the spaces God wants to use me- I just need to say “yes.” After 15 years of full-time ministry in a church context, I joined Valley Christian as the Director of Alumni Ministries to create a ministry for you (and me). The unexpected shift in me was a growing heart for you.
Alumni Ministries is impossible without the community of alumni – us – together. We hope to build lifelong relationships cultivating support, encouragement, and prayer beyond graduation wherever and whatever stage of life you find yourself in. We want you to know that you always have a home at Valley and we want to partner with you to find belonging and discover God’s purpose.
So, this is our first step: to reach out and say, “hi.” We would love the opportunity to hear more of your story beyond Valley over the coming months. For now, I invite you to stay connected with us via Instagram @vchsalumni or on our website alumni.vcs.net. Finally, if there is anything we can do to support and/or pray for you, please do not hesitate to email us at alumni@vcs.net. May God bless you with a tangible sense of His presence. It is an honor to journey with you.
Grace and Peace,
Steve Dang (‘02), M.Div.
