Ronnie Harris: From a Sideline Nudge to a Lifelong Calling

A Coach’s Invitation That Changed Everything

Ronnie Harris (‘88) did not arrive at Valley Christian High School (VCS) planning to chase Friday night lights. He was a student finding his place, and he did not see football as part of the picture. Then, in one ordinary moment that turned out to be anything but ordinary, a coach stepped in with the kind of encouragement that can redirect a life.

Ronnie still points to that conversation as the pivot point. “My football coach, Damon Gilliland, changed the trajectory of my life by talking me into playing football,” Ronnie says. The decision opened doors he never expected, eventually leading to a scholarship at the University of Oregon, where he competed in both football and track, and a seven-year NFL career with the Patriots, Seahawks, and Falcons.

Prepared for More Than the Next Step

For Ronnie, the highlights were never only about the stats, the stadiums, or the uniforms. What stayed with him most was a daily environment where adults noticed students, invested in them, and helped them believe they could grow into who God created them to be. In the middle of busy teenage years, that steady care mattered, and it still does.

Ronnie credits VCS’ culture for shaping both his confidence and his character. “The faculty at VCHS truly cared about their students,” Ronnie says. “I have wonderful memories of coaches and teachers who had a strong impact on me, and I walked away believing I could accomplish what I set my mind to.” Looking back, he sees those years as a foundation that reached beyond academics and athletics. “Each stepping stone that I took, I felt prepared, and that certainly started at Valley,” he says.

Lifelong Bonds, and a Call to Serve

Decades later, Ronnie’s VCS community is not a memory filed away, but a living thread in his everyday life. The friendships formed in classrooms, on teams, and through shared faith still show up in the simple way friends check in, laugh together, and carry one another through the seasons.

“I love the tight-knit community of VCHS. I have a group of VCHS friends that I stay in touch with,” Ronnie says. “Because of Christ, and our shared experience with teachers and coaches, we created lifelong bonds. Thirty-seven years later, we’re still in a group chat sharing life together.”

That same grounding helped him navigate transitions after football, first into pharmaceutical sales, and later into ministry. “Having a biblically grounded education planted the seed that eventually led me to ministry,” Ronnie says, and he adds, “Being a teacher is not easy, but they certainly did a fantastic job of making an environment where I felt like I was prepared for college and, from a spiritual standpoint, got a craving for more.” Now serving as a lead pastor in Edmonds, Washington, Ronnie looks back with gratitude and forward with hope: “Even now, more than ever, I would consider Christian education, and certainly Valley.”
