Students in Life Science had an opportunity to discover one of the known facts of bacteria, that it lives everywhere! First, they predicted which area of the classroom they thought contained the most bacteria and why they believed bacteria would be found there. Then, they cultured a sample from that location using a cotton swab. Lastly, they placed that culture into a sterile petri dish containing nutrient agar. Now they will be watching their bacteria grow and form colonies of the different shapes of bacteria. We will be watching the bacteria grow inside an incubator in which the heat will produce favorable conditions for the bacteria. In about a week, the students will be able to explore the bacterial growth and reasons for this growth.

“In this experiment, we are observing diffusion with the solute being the two ink colors and the solvent being the water. The ink starts out in the areas of high concentration and slowly spreads throughout and towards the low concentration (the middle section without the dye). As you can see in the pictures, the dye starts to mix into one another until it reaches dynamic equilibrium, where it is constantly moving, but no change happens. This lab helped me understand diffusion much better.”
