JH Math and Science Teachers Collaborate to Help Students Learn Distance/Time Graphs!

Mrs. Leisa Moore, Physical Science teacher, and Mrs. Amy Hawkins, Algebra 1 teacher, have been collaborating about how each teaches distance-time graphs so that students will make connections between math and science, and understand that what they are doing in both classes represents the same relationships.  Mrs. Moore used several labs to gather and compare speed and velocity of different objects (a constant velocity car and a pullback model car), including the students themselves (walking, hopping, backwards and speed walking)! They gathered the results of their scenarios and graphed them using slides on a Nearpod. Mrs. Hawkins followed those lessons with a graphing-stories lesson in which students had to graph what they were watching in a video with respect to distance and time. Finally, students matched three different cards with scenarios, graphs, and tables of values and explained their reasoning.

The creative, collaborative work of these two teachers allowed our students to “double-dip” in math and science, leading to a deeper and more lasting understanding of the lessons. Thank you, Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Hawkins!
