Warrior Wellness

Wellness

Psalms 139 states that God created our innermost being, and we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by Him.

God designed us to have thoughts, emotions, and gifts, all packaged in a physical body. Each part of us needs care and attention to ensure we thrive and live the life He created us to live. The Wellness team promotes understanding of these qualities and teaches how to care for and honor them.

We desire to provide the following:

  • Guidance and care for the whole person

  • Therapeutic services and Wellness Check-ins across campuses

  • Social Emotional Learning (SEL) embedded in classrooms and campus life
  • Wellness Parent Education Events
  • Partnership with outside community providers - Christian Counseling Collective on-campus therapy, regular registered therapy dog visits (ATD, Pet Partners and Gabriel Institute), NAMI events, SJPD Crime Prevention Unit safety talks and more

Elementary Campus

Calming Corners are a part of each elementary classroom. Our Calming Corners have age-appropriate, healthy coping strategies that support student mental health and wellness. When students experience feelings, challenges, and obstacles that get in the way of their learning and engagement, they can step into the Corner and practice things such as journaling, creative expression, reading a devotion, practicing a prayer, cuddling up with the stuffed animals, and using the de-escalating activities to self-regulate. Kindness Crew is a voluntary club for students who want to participate in activities that facilitate peer-to-peer connection, gratitude and good will.

Junior High Campus

The transition from elementary to junior high can be very challenging for some. To support our students, we created a club called Warriors United. Warriors United focuses on reaching out and welcoming students to our community, ensuring they connect and feel a sense of belonging. Students volunteer to spend their lunchtime meaningfully connecting with students in need of friendship and togetherness. The Warriors United classroom, the gathering place, is open daily. Additionally, Warriors Chill is a club that promotes a serene and contemplative environment. Students join together in a quiet, low-lit room with the sole purpose of reflection, deliberate relaxation, and to recharge. It is a device-free, work-free zone. We open Warriors Chill with a breath prayer.

High School Campus

We are continually working to support student wellness and collaborating with students on the best way to meet their needs. VCHS has made a rich investment in partnering with students to help form our wellness initiatives. Focus groups, the Mental Health Club, the Social Innovation class, ASB students and general surveys all have a hand and voice in raising awareness about mental health on campus. Offered every three years, “Breaking Down the Walls” is a vital, multi-day gathering in which peers share personal stories while building and practicing empathy and compassion. BTDW aims to facilitate Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 in action. Monthly biblically informed wellness themes and mental health-related presentations and workshops further tend to the wellbeing of our student body. The main floor of the Conservatory is a connection point called the Student Life Center. It is a communal place with comfy seating, a shuffleboard, foosball table, games and various healthy coping tools. Students enjoy time in this space by increasing relaxation, connections, self-care, and general wellbeing.

It is our belief that God created us with thoughts, feelings, passions, and hopes. God desires us to live life to the fullest and He wants us to thrive spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally and personally. We are working to create opportunities for students to learn about each part of themselves and practice being healthy and well in all areas of their life.-Amy Hernandez, pioneering K-12 Wellness Director of blessed memory
